THE TEAM LUCIO CECCHINELLO RANDY DE PUNIET MOTORBIKE WORLD STANDING
LUCIO CECCHINELLO
Since he was a child, the roar of the engines, acceleration and speed have always attracted Lucio immensely! When he was just 12 he had turned his “Motorella Benelli” into a micro racing motorbike then, a couple of years later, he started to jump on the motocross fields with a TGM supported by a Minarelli 50cc engine that he had meticulously souped up! As soon as he got his licence, he broke his piggy bank containing his savings earned thanks to his summer jobs (barman, plumber, mechanic) and, with the help of his father Luciano’s wallet, he bought a brand new Honda NS 125 and thanks to it, he became aware of the breeze coming from the “folds” while he was whizzing down the wide curves in the country roads and he fell in love with racing motorbikes.

The desire to race on the track was growing stronger but school related duties and dad Luciano’s opposition were not leaving any chance to “sixteen years old Lucio’s desire” to be accomplished. In order to satisfy at least his desire to hear the engines’ roar, smell the Avio gasoline and the castor oil, Lucio started to work, during the weekends, as a mechanic for some friends, riders in the national and international competitions, until he succeeded, a couple of years later, in becoming a mechanic for the prestigious Team Italia engaged in the European Championship.

As soon as he turned eighteen  (eventually he convinced daddy Luciano!) Lucio, in 1989, made his debut as rider in the Italian Sport Production Championship riding a Honda 125 NSR. At his third race competition, on the Monza race track, Lucio earned his first victory! More victories and pole positions followed and in 1990 Lucio finished by getting a placement on the podium in the Italian Sport Production Championship, becoming Italian Runner-up champion.

In 1991 Lucio made his debut in the 125cc European Championship with the Team Italia (team managed by the Italian Motorcycle Federation, where, in the previous three years, he had worked as a mechanic…) and he took the 10th placement in the final standings. In 1992 Lucio earned his European Runner-up award in the 125 cc class, still as a rider of the Team Italia, and in 1993 he made his debut in the World Championship riding a Gazzaniga motorbike by the famous manufacturer from Milan.

In 1994 the team GIVI offered Lucio the opportunity to race in the MotoGP riding a Honda RS 125cc with which he scored his first world championship points. In 1995 the prestigious Team Pileri gave Lucio the chance to race with a Honda 125 KIT in the European Championship and he took up the offer winning a good 8 races out of the 11 included in the programme, becoming European Champion setting a category winning record still unbeaten!

The year 1996 marked the turning point: Lucio set up his own team for the 125cc World Championship and he scored several and important results in the top ten! In 1997, always with Honda, the programme continued and in 1998, after 4 MotoGP, Lucio scored his first hard-won victory in the 125cc World Championship (Jarama - Spagna).

Still in 1998 Lucio obtained more important podiums and in 1999 he earned a famous podium on the race track in Brno, Czech Republic, alongside his legendary and very nice team mate Noboru Ueda. Other important results were achieved in the year 2000 and in 2001/2002 Lucio, riding an Aprilia RS 125 motorbike, earned many podiums and victories finishing both seasons in the 4th placement in the final World standings. In 2003 (his last year in the competitions) Lucio accomplished one of his little big dreams: he won the Mugello Italian Grand Prix, the same race track where he started his first race training.

Since 2004 Lucio is engaged full time in managing the LCR Team and he is a member of the IRTA Commission (teams association), namely the body interacting with the Motorbike World Championship organisers.
